Wedding Wednesday – Our Playlist

A lot of people that are doing DIY weddings these days are also doing all of their music as well.  I’ve only been to one other wedding where they did their own music, but it was only ceremony and mealtime music (no dancing).  We decided to do all of our own music for our wedding  because our venue was “iPod ready” – meaning, they had a nice sound system and all we had to do was hook our mp3 player or laptop up.  Plus, it just saved us a ton of money not having to have a DJ.

We split the music up into different Playlists so they were easy to find for the different parts of the wedding: Pre-ceremony, Ceremony, Dinner/Cocktail Hour, and Reception/Dance music. We did have another playlist set up for the bouquet and garter toss as well, so those songs were easy to find. You’d want to add any father-daughter, mother-son dances as well 🙂  We asked a friend to control our music, and it was super easy for him – he was such a champ!

Getting all of our music was the only challenge and we did a combination of things to find the right songs.  Here’s some tips and things we did:

  • Go through all of your own music and find songs you like that would fit will with your wedding music. Be thinking about background music, dance music, as well as the most important ones like what you’ll walk down to the aisle to.
  • Pandora. I listen to Pandora every day at work, and when a song came on that I thought would fit well somewhere in our wedding, I wrote it down in a Google spreadsheet.  I learned about a lot of great music this way as well 🙂
  • Google sample wedding playlists.  This was very important for us since we wanted a variety of music, for the old and young folks alike!  There’s some stuff I would personally not listen to, but that I thought people would like to dance to – as well as songs that I wouldn’t have thought of.

We kept a Google spreadsheet going for a few months, adding new songs here and there as we pleased. As it got closer to the wedding, we started sorting them into our various playlists.  We ended up having way too much music, and had to nix some stuff, but I think we ended up with a great variety of music. Although, there’s no Country here 😉 haha.

So here’s all of our wedding music, sorted by playlist (sorry about the random orders somewhat, I just typed how it showed up on my computer!). Hopefully it helps someone out there who is putting together music for their wedding. Enjoy!

  1. Ooh, I love so many of these songs. What an awesome list! The variety is good, and it really is a great mix of genres, as well as old/newness. So nice!

  2. I really like the idea of keeping a spreadsheet of music, because I’m already compiling lists in my head of music I want played at my wedding, lol! Looks like you two put together a great list.

  3. I LOVE THIS! Even though we didn’t do an iPod wedding, we did pick all the music for our DJ to play and just recently were lamenting how we SHOULD HAVE FRIGGIN SAVED THE LIST. I could kick myself for not at least printing out our song list! Ugh! Anyway, you’ve reignited an inspiration in me to sit down and list all the ones I can remember, for posterity’s sake.

  4. We went the ipod route too but you were way more organized than I was. I picked up my best friend from the airport and on the three hour drive to the venue, I told her to put together a playlist on her ipod. She did a pretty good job 🙂

  5. We used at least 5 of those songs at our wedding. 🙂 Great taste in music!!

You had a great playlist! Love the Pandora idea. When I was working, I would listen to Pandora all day, too, and I would write down every song that I loved! I also have a list going for our wedding this June. Lol, I started it before we were even engaged, but I knew when the time came, it would pay off that I was prepared!! 😛
